Improbable Patriot: The Secret

History of Monsieur de

beaumarchais, the French playwright who saved the American Revolution

by Harlow Unger

Harlow Unger is one of our premier independent historians, and he writes with a natural flair and an intellectual rigor free of jargon. His regular publisher passed on this book and I acquired it because it is an incredible story of a little known genius polymath who wrote "The Marriage of Figaro," invented the wristwatch, and supplied Washington's Continental Army with most of their gunpowder just to stick it to the British.
